A series of recent review articles reveals considerable current activity in the field of artificial molecular rotors, motivated by an intrinsic interest and their possible future applications as ultrafast organic dielectrics. The term "molecular rotor" refers to the whole molecule, and "rotator" refers to its rotating part that has the smaller moment of inertia. When needed, "stator" is the part that has the larger moment of inertia relative to a common axle. Surface-mounted rotors have been the subject of many investigations as isolated molecules or as collections of nearly independent noninteracting molecules.
