Molecular logic gates, which are capable of performing Boolean logic operation by receiving chemical, biological or optical input signals, have offered a new paradigm for future computing technology in light of the need for miniaturization and the increase of function density. In recent decades, a variety of substances and functional materials have been used for constructing simple molecular logic gates. Furthermore, a large number of studies have dealt with the fabrication of complicated logic circuits and functional devices using multiple triggers or modular coupling of the computing elements. The investigation of practical applications of molecular logic gates has been in the forefront of research. To date, besides attempts to improve information processing on the conceptual level, several systems have been demonstrated for multi-parameter sensing, drug delivery, intelligent diagnostics, and regulation of protein activity, in which outputs manifested as effective functions controlled by particular inputs. Although valuable, developing digital systems with tangible applications using more functional materials still remains a big challenge.
