The major functions of a quench-ant are to mediate heat transfer and optimize the uniformity of heat transfer throughout the quenching process. For polymer quenchants, this is achieved by the formation and subsequent breakage and removal of an insulating liquid film that forms around the hot metal part upon initial immersion.
