The euphoria over fixed broadband wireless technologies has been dampened by the recent economic downturn, but development still continues. Much of the early analysis of unlicensed versus licensed has been characterized by technological myopia or an over-estimation of the short-term impact of a new technology that ignores the long-term effect. There is no pricing elasticity for product marketing, nor is there a clear path to define a true market forecast. Market segments that I have covered in this column over the years—including Video On Demand (VOD), Multiple, 2-way, simultaneous Full Motion Video (FMV) connections, DSP digital signal processing and analog technologies, video compression and stream- ing video—are all hot topics, but they do not determine market success.
