MPEG-4 & MPEG-7: Ever-Widening Imaging Apps?

Originally intended for very low bit-rate compression of video signals between 64 kbit/s to 1.5 Mb/s-ideal for the Internet, the new MPEG-4 multimedia standard has plenty of room to grow. This long fought-over image-handling standard includes provisions for a host of new visual apps—both image and graphic based—that will expand imaging's interactive usage. Already, there is a plethora of activity in DVD, digital cameras, and chip development to warrant enthusiasm for location-based streaming media, digital cinema, and mobile networks.
