Camera Interface Directions: USB 2.0 vs. IEEE 1394: Maybe It Just Doesn't Matter!

Much has been written recently of USB 2.0 vs. 1394, as if this was an issue of great importance. While pitting one technology against another (and, of course, their backers, while you're at it) may make for good copy, the reality for system implementers is that it could be this year's non-issue. Within a few years, USB 2.0 at 480 mbps will be standard on almost all PCs. In fact, that's virtually a given now. As a result, USB 2.0 will become standard on all devices that need high-bandwidth connection PCs—and that certainly applies to most industrial/scientific imaging situations.
