Durban turns to simulator for training

Transnet port terminals, South Africa's state-owned port company, has invested R6.7m (US$865,000) in a crane training simulator at the port of Durban. Using state-of-the-art computers and giant screens inside a 40ft shipping container, the MasterLift 4000 will help crane operators at Durban's new Pier 1 Container Terminal to practise challenging manoeuvres. It can simulate weather conditions, environment and situations that cannot be safely replicated using traditional methods. The installation is a result of co-operation between Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) and African National Engineering - the local agent for GlobalSim, a leader in simulation training systems for the crane and material handling market.
