Association calls for single industry standard for box inspection

Container operators can significantly reduce costs when off-hiring leased containers, according to new research by the Container Owners Association (COA).rnThe study suggests shipping lines can save an average of 12.9% on the cost of repairing containers at the end of a lease contract, and the COA is now calling for a single industry standard for off-hire container inspection. Most shipping lines operate container fleets comprising a mixture of owned and leased containers. When off-hired at the end of a lease contract, the container is surveyed and an estimate is prepared for any repair work needed for the container to comply with one of two interchange criteria accepted by industry: the COA-endorsed Common Interchange Criteria (CIC) and the IICL-5.
