A sharp downturn in traffic volumes during the final quarter of 2008 meant that Europe's largest container port registered no growth in its throughput in 2008.rnWhile Rotterdam slipped three places in the table as a consequence, it remained Europe's leading box port and appears well placed to do the same this year.rnDespite an 18% fall in box traffic in the first quarter of 2009 and projections of a 6-10% decline for the full year, Hans Smits, the port authority's CEO, is confident about the future. He points out that the port is investing €4bn (US$5.8bn) up to 2020 and terminal operators will invest €10bn.
