Whether we like it or do not, librarians engage in some sort of negotiation all the time. When we think of negotiation, we often narrow the conversation to include negotiation for content, product, and services. However, this limited view excludes the myriad negotiations that each of us conducts every day-in both our professional and our personal lives. To name a few, we negotiate with our families; with coworkers; with employers and employees; with user communities; with funding agencies; with administrators; and with library boards. It could be the child asking the parent whether he or she has to eat four or five more bites of vegetables to get dessert or it could be the employee negotiating for a larger salary from his or her employer. In any of the cases mentioned above-negotiating for content, products, and services or other types of negotiation-best practices for negotiation hold true.
