Perspectives on Speech and Language Interaction for Daily Assistive Technology: Overall Introduction to the Special Issue Part 3

This special issue brings together a diverse set of studies that demonstrate the richness of the field. This body of research has potential to impact the daily lives of users with disabilities as well as therapists and engineers. All these studies emphasize the importance of data acquisition and that the evaluation must be adapted to the targeted user. Several of the articles are in the domain of AAC; it is worth emphasizing the emergence of increasing interest for smart environments and companions which, with the spread of the Internet of Things, will constitute an important opportunity for the AT community. The articles in this special issue represent only a subset of how speech and language processing can change daily lives of millions of people. We therefore invite the reader to explore the broader literature and participate in our events in the future.
