Seismic Design Method for Reinforced Concrete Two-Way Column Hinges

The shear capacity of two-way reinforced concrete hinges is currently determined using the shear friction method, even though the behavior of these hinges under lateral load is dominated by flexural deformations. To develop a more rational method for estimating the shear capacity of two-way hinges, data from shake-table testing of five one-third scale reinforced concrete bridge column models with two-way hinges were used. The proposed method was evaluated for 10 other piers that incorporated two-way hinges at the base. It was found that the proposed method leads to a much closer correlation with the test data and smaller scatter. A design example was used to illustrate the application of the proposed method. Based on the experimental data, a nonlinear shear-slip relationship and an equation to calculate the plastic hinge length at hinges were also proposed for application in the nonlinear analysis of bridges incorporating two-way hinges.
