British, and, increasingly now, international standards set out precise, uniform, universally understood specifications of materials, performance, measurements, processes, testing and many other parameters, covering the gamut of modern technologies. Standards are one of the chief ways in which industrial communities regulate themselves in keeping with agreed norms, the mere presence of a manufacturing, engineering, technical or other relevant standard is an assurance of conformity among nations whose economic and political systems may in other respects vary considerably.
