The role of containment systems in the safe working environment

During the last few years there has been an expansion of the number of containment facilities being designed for work with dangerous pathogens and genetically modified organisms (GMO's). New legislation which implements European Directives is in place covering the Biological Agents and the Contained Use of GMO's, and the Biological Agents Directive is due to he implemented as an amendment to the COSHH regulations. Both sets of legislation require appropriate containment facilities depending on the level of risk, to people and in the case of GMO legislation, the environment. In the UK the containment regulations are outlined in the relevant pieces of legislation and supplemented guidance, which has largely been produced by the HSE.
