I pledge allegiance to the forms of database normalization. And to each table, which shall describe, one entity; fields indivisible, non-redundant, with full dependence on the primary key. — With apologies to E. F. Codd and Francis Bellamy. Back when I started building databases, I tracked down every possible training seminar available (that my company would spring for, of course) and attended hours of training. In many of those classes, every student had a computer, and the instructor made excellent use of PowerPoint presentations and pretty handouts, and did lots of tinkering with the software itself to build sample databases. And, of course, there were cookie breaks. That might have been my favorite part.
