The town of Goerlitz lies in Oberlausitz, an area of rolling countryside and small towns now mostly within the province of Saxony, in eastern Germany. The inhabitants include Germans, Sorbs, Poles and Czechs, among others. Ask people from Goerlitz where they belong, and they'll firmly reply 'Oberlausitz'. Ask them to define Oberlausitz, and they are rather less certain. Oberlausitz is as much a state of mind as an actual location. The film The Grand Budapest Hotel, directed by Wes Anderson, is set mostly in the 1930s in the fictitious republic of Zubrowka, an alpine land of snowy peaks, cable cars, chamois, ski runs and isolated mountaintop monasteries. The plot revolves around the adventures of the hotel concierge, Gustave H, played in fine style by Ralph Fiennes, accompanied by his page and disciple Zero, played by the charming Toni Revolori. A black comedy, with family conspiracies, a stolen painting and a prison escape, The Grand Budapest Hotel presents the tragedy of the loss of an idealised interior world.
