CORR Insights®: Temporary External Fixation Can Stabilize Hip Transposition Arthroplasty After Resection of Malignant Periacetabular Bone Tumors

It is an age-old discussion among orthopaedic oncologists: How do we reconstruct a bony defect of the pelvis/acetabulum following resection of a malignant neoplasm? And perhaps as importantly: Should we reconstruct these at all? When I attend the Annual Meeting of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS), I often hear arguments defending both reconstructive and non-reconstructive approaches. In my view, reconstruction has recently been viewed in a more-favorable light at these meetings given the modern capabilities offered by custom cutting guides, intraoperative navigation, and specifically three-dimensional printed implants [1].
