CMV-independent increase in CD27−CD28+ CD8+ EMRA T cells is inversely related to mortality in octogenarians

Kaplan-Meier curves with their respective log-rank p-values identify male gender and pre-existing comorbidity, such as cancer, frailty, anaemia or heart failure (reflected by elevated plasma NT-proBNP) as predictors of adverse outcome in octogenarians. Likewise, low lymphocyte counts (tertiles <1420 × 10 /μl, 1420–1940 × 10 /μl and >1940 × 10 /μl) and a low percentage of CD27−CD28+ CD8+ T cells (tertiles <1.9%, 1.9–3.4% and >3.4%) are singular predictors of reduced survival.
