美国著名作家伊迪丝·华顿在小说《纯真年代》中，通过男主人公纽兰·阿切尔所处的爱情和婚姻困境展现了十九世纪七十年代纽约上流社会环境中世俗传统与个人追求之间的对抗，以及个人真实情感追求与禁锢的宗族权威之间的一场失败的斗争。本文试图以分析心理学家卡尔·荣格的原型理论视角剖析该小说中的人物性格特征及对其命运的影响。%In her novel,"The Age of Innocence", Edith Wharton presents the readers, through the dilemmas of love and marriage faced by the protagonist Newland Archer, a vision of the con-frontation between conventions and personal fulfillment and a losing battle between individual aspirations and the forbidding authority of New York's social tribe in the 1870s. This paper at-tempts to analyze the character of the protagonist and its impact on his fate from the perspective of C. G. Jung's archetypes theory.
