@@ The UN should not confuse deserts with desertification.Deserts are good: they have biodiverse ecosystems and rich human cultures and histories. Deserts are not necessarily desertified. In contrast, desertification is bad: it is associated with degraded ecosystems, soil and water; loss of species; loss of productivity; loss of cultural diversity and ecological knowledge, and marginalisation of people. Marginalisation is associated with poverty and a lack of infrastructure, resources,training and assistance.
