@@ 1 The beginning of palaeomagnetic research on Chinese loess in ZurichrnA rainy day in spring 1981 saw the opening up of a new avenue of research activity in the palaeomagnetic laboratory at ETH Zurich. Unexpectedly and without advance notice an elderly Chinese man presented himself at the door of our laboratory which is hidden in the wooded outskirts of Zurich. He had with him two heavy parcels-packed full with what turned out to be a huge number of large loess samples. With a friendly smile he introduced himself, entered the laboratory, and asked for scientific collaboration.
