Born in Changshu, Qiu Yuan, who styled himself Qiu Yuxue, was an important figure from Suzhou Kunqu Opera School in the late Ming and the early Qing dynasty. In his life, he wrote three romances in completed versions, namely, Clique Elements'Steles, Huanyuan Chest, and Grace of the Imperial Robe, the first of which shapes Liu Kui, an image of an unyielding loyal and upright official, against Cai Jing, a traitorous image in power on the basis of the real-life historical events in the Northern Song dynasty. Huanyuan Chest describes the love and marriage stories between Fang Duansheng and Liu Wanyun and Chen Yue'e, while Grace of the Imperial Robe depicts the stories of the life-and-death struggles between Gao Qiong, a remote region army commander in Hexi, and traitorous officials in power in the resistance against the invaders from the Western Xia Kingdom.
