Based on our recent research, we find that some problems con- cerning the DOC, such as the case assignment and the theta-role assignment of the two objects, can not be appropriately solved. As a result, the validity of the DOC per se is called into query. Evidence from the non-rigidity of the indirect object, the history of the DOC, and the typological analysis of the DOC supports the claim that the DOC is an illusion. As a way out, the so-called DOC is supposed to be a representation of the dative construction （DC） resulting from cliticization.
