Networks include connectionless and connection-oriented service types, in which IP and ATM can be as major examples of the two types. Conneetiouless IP is more efficient for browser, email, and other non-real-time services, but for services in real-time delivery with high quality, ATM is a better choice. However, neither can be replaced by the other.
