Aims. The aims of this randomized, controlled, blinded clinical re-entry study in humans were to compare ridge dimensions and histologic characteristics of two different allograft materials using an acellular dermal matrix barrier membrane used for ridge augmentation. Conclusions. Both the cancellous block allograft and the demineralized bone matrix allograft significantly increased ridge width. The cancellous block allograft, however, produced significantly greater ridge width gain than the demineralized bone matrix allograft. The vertical component of the initial ridge defects was minimal, consequently both groups had negligible gain of mean bone height. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).
