Computer systems and networks within the modern vehicle are expanding exponentially. Following this trend is the demand for the data stored on the vehicle computers. Law enforcement agencies, crash investigators, auto manufacturers, insurance companies, and other private and government agencies are all recognizing benefit of vehicle computer data in their investigations. This research identifies vehicle computer types and what data is stored on vehicle computers that can provide evidence during an investigation. It also discusses the current forensics tools and skills required for successful investigation of automotive computers. Finally, it offers a recommendation for future development of forensic tools to expand the understanding of automotive computers.
