The Role Family Communication Patterns Play in Shaping People's Responses and Perceived Outcomes to Boundary Turbulence via Privacy Breaches in Their Personal Relationships

The purpose of this study was to further analyze the relationship between family communication patterns theory and its relationship to privacy management theory. More specifically, the goal was to examine the effects of a family's conversation orientation on adult children when dealing with boundary turbulence after their privacy has been violated. Approach strategies (i.e., integrative and distributive), withdrawal strategies (i.e., avoidance and distance), and relational consequences (i.e., improvement or damage) were measured with conversation orientation as a result of the boundary turbulence. Results indicated that there was a positive relationship between conversation orientation with approach strategies and relational improvement. Thus, those individuals that come from a high conversation orientation family are more likely to approach a violator after a privacy breach, and participate in relational improvement.
