A Media Intervention for Hookah Smoking at Florida State University

The purpose of this study was to promote quitting and abstinence of hookah smoking in a college population using a media intervention. Using a mixed-method design, participants were evaluated using pre- and post- intervention surveys. The researcher designed four survey instruments and a brief digital hookah intervention to promote quitting and abstinence among college undergraduates and graduates at Florida State University. A total of 7,504 participants were invited to participate in this research. The researcher's findings revealed there was a significant change in health beliefs associated with the health risks of hookah smoking. Participants reported increased awareness about what hookah is, its health risks, hookah's equivalency to cigarettes, and learning the hookah mouthpiece could be used as a vehicle to transmit germs.
