A Dual Diagnosis of Hearing Loss and an Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Illustrative Case Study

With the dearth of literature within the area of individuals with a dual diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder and hearing loss, this qualitative case study provides an account of a parent's perceptions and experiences of the diagnostic and intervention process for their child with this dual diagnosis during the first years of life. The study focuses on the impact/experience of the dual diagnosis after the advent of the universal newborn hearing screening process. This study also analyzes the collaborative efforts of professionals during diagnosis and treatment from parent perspective. This study utilized an in-depth interview process. Medical records and clinic documents were analyzed and coded to provide additional information. Results were analyzed using the thematic network analysis theory. Results revealed a unique experience with the family. Themes from this study highlight the diagnostic, intervention, and collaboration process as experienced by the family. Clinical implications and the need for future research are discussed.
