This project investigated the feasibility for flow augmentation in Beargrass Creek using a waste water stream of filter backwash water from the local municipal water treatment and supply agency, Louisville Water Company. The project concept originated through collaborative discussion between the Louisville Water Company (LWC) and the local waste water and storm water management agency, Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD). The project has potential to bring benefits to both organizations in terms of; enhancement and improvement of the water quality in the stream, elimination of the disposal of useable water source, and for the project to serve as highly-visible environmentally-friendly illustration of water conservation through re-use and re-cycling in the local community. This work describes the problem and outlines the quantitative aspects of the project, including water quantity, water quality, and economic components.;The issue of flow augmentation can be an important component for maintaining and improving water quality in streams during low flow or drought periods. Beargrass creek is a natural water body flowing through an urban community and historically has functioned as a major source of water supply, waste disposal, and recreation. Typically the late summer and fall season can be expected to have low or very low rainfall with drought conditions often resulting. During low flow and drought conditions the water quality in Beargrass Creek may be compromised and this can result in critical water quality conditions and associated water quality profile failing to meet state and federal water quality standards.;Implementing measures to improve water quality in surface waters brings a benefit to MSD in the form of meeting federally regulated water quality conditions and thereby the local community receives a benefit in terms of improved stream conditions. The flow augmentation concept can be stated as a form of water re-use or a recycling approach leading to increased water quality. Due to economic factors and public perception, flow augmentation may be an appealing technique to increase water quality and assist in improving the natural habitat of the stream.
