Physical Activity and Mood in the Elderly Population: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review

The aim of this meta-analysis and systematic review is to evaluate the effect of physical activity on mood in the elderly population. This researcher consulted pre-existing studies published between January 2013 and January 2017, then collected data on outcomes of intervention of physical activity. Subsequently, the researcher collected information on types, intensity, duration, and frequency of physical activity. A systematic review was conducted to gather information in conjunction with the synthesizing of data. This researcher used a qualitative approach to analyze the findings. This researcher used Word Document to conduct a qualitative analysis to present the findings. Eleven pre-existing studies were selected based on specific variables that fit the need of the research. The pre-existing studies held no restrictions to the demographics besides age of population. The present meta-analysis concluded that physical activity, especially aerobic training, improves mood in older adults. However, more information is needed to understand the other confounding characteristics with physical activity with older adults.
