Seasons of change: Treaty rights, labor, and the historical memory of work among Lake Superior Ojibwe, 1870--1942.

This dissertation, Seasons of Change: Treaty Rights, Labor and the Historical Memory of Work Among Lake Superior Ojibwe, 1870-1942, explores the roles tribal self-determination and economic transformation in the persistence of Ojibwe culture and identity in the Bad River, Red Cliff, Fond du Lac, and Grand Portage reservation communities during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It looks at the intricate relationship between the practice of tribal treaty rights and the numerous forms of labor Ojibwe engaged in during this in order to make a living, underscoring the political importance of their adaptability. Privileging Ojibwe perspectives of history, this study deconstructs conventional Western divisions between what has been categorized as traditional and modern, reconfigures customary definitions of labor in American history, and challenges state and federal policies that have been employed to deny American Indians access to their rights and resources in contemporary times.
