Problem under investigation. Evaluation of the Corporate Compliance Program (CCP) at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), specifically to assess knowledge and awareness of the CCP.Objective/hypothesis. To evaluate awareness, knowledge and attitudes among RPCI employees about the Corporate Compliance Program (CCP). As a secondary objective, the Corporate Compliance Outreach Program was also evaluated.Background. In 1998, the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG) released the OIG Compliance Program Guidance for Hospitals. This Guidance was intended to assist hospitals to develop effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable Federal and State law, as well as to the program requirements of Federal, State and private health care plans. The adoption and implementation of these compliance programs remain voluntary, but are strongly supported by the Federal and State governments.Methods. The study population for this investigation comprised all employees of RPCI. A survey tool was drafted, piloted and finalized, and distributed to employees with their paychecks at two time points: April 2006 and April 2008. The survey contained items on demographics, knowledge of the RPCI CCP, and items on attitudes and concepts relating to Corporate Compliance. An additional open-ended question was used to solicit general feedback from respondents.Results. The baseline survey in 2006 yielded 950 surveys (response rate = 35.3%). The followup survey in 2008 generated an overall response rate of 33.8% with 981 returned surveys. Significant improvements in knowledge of the CCP were noted between the 2006 and 2008 surveys. Employees who were more likely to correctly identify the aspects of the CCP were those who were new to RPCI (employed 1 year), worked days, paid by Health Research, Inc. (HRI) and employed in a Research position. New employee and persons working full-time were most likely to report agreement with the Compliance concepts.Method for data analysis. Descriptive statistics and tabular presentations were used to summarize responses to survey items. Statistical significance was assessed using chi-square, Kendall's tau and logistic regression based on p0.05.Potential significance: As the Federal and State governments encourage assessment of the effectiveness of these voluntary compliance programs, demand for the development and use of survey tools will increase. These results provide valuable feedback on the impact of the CCP at RPCI which will inform future educational activities.
