Assessment of nutrient management Benefical Management Practices (BMPS) for poultry manure on high fertility fields in the Fraser Valley.

A field study was conducted on two contrasting sites in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia with histories of elevated soil nitrate concentrations and multi-year poultry manure application to assess implementation of nutrient related Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) on raspberries and silage corn. Both sites had no yield response to any rate of poultry manure but post-harvest soil nitrate concentrations were progressively reduced with lower rates of poultry manure. Barriers to adoption of BMPs included the high cost of shipping poultry manure and concerns about lower application rates affecting yield. Both regulatory and incentive-based policies were considered for addressing the shipping cost barrier. In the silage corn scenario, economic benefits of lower application rates were highly sensitive to yield reductions, confirming the barrier. Scientific and policy tools are proposed to improve the quality of the nutrient management program in BC and increase BMP uptake.
