One of the important factors that affects the performance of the video processing is its computational complexity. This in turn affects the power consumed and the accuracy. There are several methods and techniques to reduce the consumed power and the computational complexity. Most of these methods employ low power techniques, and compromise on the accuracy of the output. In the whole H.264 video codec, motion estimation consumes most of the power and involves high computation time. In this thesis, an algorithmic level technique is proposed, which reduces the computational complexity of the H.264 codec, there by increasing its operation speed and making it more suitable for real time applications. The proposed method is tuned for both high and low bit rate applications. This thesis also discusses the various implementation aspects of the proposed method and describes in detail the accuracy and complexity analysis of the proposed method in comparison with the existing H.264 standard.
