Garang's seeds: An historical ethnography of a mission to rebuild south Sudan.

In 1986 the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army sent 619 south Sudanese adolescents from an Ethiopian refugee camp to Cuba where they received a free education over the next twelve to fifteen years. In 2006 the University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine partnered with Samaritan's Purse, a Christian aid organization, to assist fifteen south Sudanese Cuban medical school graduates to return to southern Sudan to provide medical care for their regions' people. This thesis examines the stated factors influencing their return (e.g., family and the desire to practice medicine) from the perspective of the voluntary return literature in refugee studies, and applies an historical approach to analyzing one of the motivating factors: the 'mission' to return and apply the education and skills obtained in Cuban schools to the post-war process. An examination of 'mission' exposes significant historical and ideological influences in the interview statements of the returning doctors.
