A hybrid template-based composite classification system.

In research sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and Air Combat Command, Captain Turnbaugh designed a system for correctly identifying and classifying objects in combat situations. The classification system he developed included a novel out-of-library detector, the first such successful classifier of this type, which indentifies targets for which the classification system has not yet been trained to recognize. He also developed a hybrid classifier that relies on novel statistical and syntactic methods that is both robust and fast, in terms of computation time. Captain Turnbaugh's work represents a major advance in the field automatic target recognition.
