Synthesis and characterization of novel bioactive polymers and surface coatings.

Using a combinatorial and high-throughput coatings workflow, polymers and coatings were analyzed for their biological effect on a variety of marine and pathogenic microorganisms. All systems studied contained the biologically active ingredient covalently attached (i.e. "tethered") to the polymer component. This created a contact-active surface that was designed to not release active ingredient over time.;Covalent attachment provided an environmentally-friendly solution to existing, releasing technologies. Polymers and coatings created in this fashion were characterized by material and biological properties for their effectiveness and in some cases compared to commercial coatings. Several coating types were evaluated with the assistance of statistical experimental design which further quantified experimental data by capturing variation in the experiments. Correlations and higher order interactions were highlighted.
