Virtual reality used as an effective rehabilitation tool for increasing motor function in people with physical disabilities: A systematic literature review.

Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging treatment tool being used in rehabilitation practices. Many studies have been conducted on the use of virtual reality, although none have looked at the overall efficacy of virtual reality platforms for improving motor control. Three virtual technology platforms (Nintendo Wii, Sony EyeToy and GestureTek Technologies. IREX) where compared to answer the question, are virtual reality technologies effective treatment tools to increase motor control in individuals with physical disabilities?;To address this question, a systematic literature review was conducted resulting in a total of 27 articles that examined the use of VR to improve motor control. Our study of the Sony EyeToy, IREX, and Nintendo Wii found that these virtual reality tools help to increase motor control skills with the client populations researched, including improvements in reaching patterns, range of motion, postural control and balance, strength, endurance, and coordination, visual perception, and reaction speed. The current evidence on the use of VR as a treatment tool supports its use in occupational therapy rehabilitation and prompts further research into the effectiveness of the Nintendo Wii.
