The thesis examines the way that fairy tales are incorporated into the works of Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Hofmannsthal constantly works in motifs from the 1001 Nights, including the oriental carpet motif that weaves its way throughout. The appropriation of oriental material into Hofinannsthal's fairy tales reveals how they inspire him to imagery of his own. The qualitative aspects: diversity, the miraculous component and the "poetic imagination", allow Hofmannsthal to confront the restrictions of reality from another point of view and to reproduce the traditional oriental tales with new themes. These aspects of the oriental tale, gained through Galland's translation Les mille et und nuits, release him from the western aesthetic viewpoint, based on moral and rational principles. This method is traced through the following tales: Marchen der 672. Nacht, Geschichte von den Prinzen Amgiad und Assad, Der goldene Apfel and Die Frau ohne Schatten .
