Perceived Constraints by College Students to Participation in Campus Recreational Sports Programs at a Southeastern Historicallly Black College and University (HBCU)

Campus recreation participation has many beneficial impacts from increased health and fitness, to promoting school spirit and a feeling of belonging with other students. These help to lead toward student retention for universities, while giving students a positive stress reliever and improving teamwork. The purpose of this study was to measure how perceived constraints affect the recreational sport participation among students attending North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Participation rates as well as differences among gender, age, and residence were also examined. 127 students attending NCCU completed an online survey to determine perceived constraints affecting recreational sport participation. Data revealed the highest perceived constraints were "Lack of time because of work, school, or family" and "I do not know what is available". Significant differences were also found with the perceptions of constraints by gender, age, and residence. The research administered supplies campus recreation staff with information needed to tailor programs to deliver increased opportunities for students and maximize participation.
