Female Persistence in STEM Careers: A Case Study of Hispanic Females Who Overcame the Academic and Cultural Odds

The purpose of this case study was to conduct a deep investigation of the cultural Hispanic beliefs, perceptions, and other factors that influence females' STEM career choice and their persistence in the field. An ethnography study was implemented and data were collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews and on site observations. Three participants who studied a STEM field and are currently successful professionals participated in this case study along with some of their parents, and a role model for each. The researcher found that in order for STEM students to choose, persist and be successful in a STEM career they need to have support systems in place including parent support, extra-curricular engagement, mentor and role model presence, and a mix of complex skills such as knowledge, persistent attitude, determination, confidence and a hunger to succeed. The researcher concluded that even though Hispanic females might be hesitant when choosing a STEM field with the right support, determination, dedication, and drive they can overcome the educational and cultural odds.
