My graduate thesis is going to be a historiographic study of the various interpretations of Marcel Duchamp's The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelor's, Even, a.k.a. the Large Glass, 1915-1923. Duchamp's work went virtually unnoticed for over three decades, until Robert Lebel published the first monograph on him in 1959. Since then, there has been an explosion of literature written about Duchamp, and the artist has served as an inspiration for nearly every major artist that succeeded him. For over a century now, the Large Glass has continued to fascinate and perplex its viewers, each of whom has developed his or her own individual take on this mysterious work of art. My thesis will be broken up into three parts, including an introduction to the work (history, significance, and an overview of the individual components) and two different interpretations of the piece, a scientific interpretation as well as a psychoanalytic interpretation.
