The analysis of the benefits and risks of home-based healthcare in the United States: Should the patient-centered medical home model of care be reinforced?

A great need exists to reevaluate the methods used by healthcare providers caring for in-home patients. The United States home-based healthcare system encountered numerous unplanned hospital admissions due to the increase of physical injuries and medical negligence experienced by patients. The purpose of this capstone was to determine if the PCMH model should be reinforced in home healthcare settings. The data was primarily collected using a literature review. For this capstone project the benefits and risks of home health services in the United States using various research theories were analyzed. Findings identified positive features of the PCMH model, as well as the discovery of several barriers that affected the success of the model. Additionally, the capstone project discussed how the PCMH model provided a lens of care, presenting both the benefits and the risks associated with the overall care for home health patients. The capstone concluded that the PCMH model is a work in progress. When used in clinical settings, the PCMH model can assist in the improvement of health of people of all ages.
