A spatial analysis of the Ripley site.

This paper presents a spatial analysis of the Ripley archaeological site (NYSM2490) in order to gain a better understanding of site use and type. The Ripley site is a Late Prehistoric and Historic Contact Period Native American site located in southwestern New York, and was inhabited by the Erie Indians. The primary focus of this project is to analyze intrasite spatial relationships using data from excavations by the Ripley Archaeological Project during the late 1980s and early 1990s (Sullivan 1996; Neusius et. al. 1998). This research highlights the use of geographic information systems on older archaeological sites. The theoretical perspective of this research stems from a heuristic approach, which combines archaeology and geographic information systems and the context in which the spatial patterns being studied were created. After detailed analyses, it was concluded that there were most likely two separate components at Ripley with different site functions.
