Assessing Job Satisfaction and Burnout Within the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Correctional employees are at a risk for experiencing decreased job satisfaction and increased burnout due to dangerous working environments and limited resources. Protecting society and rehabilitating dangerous offenders would not be possible without properly trained and satisfied staff. This study analyzed 2,238 employees who completed the 2008 Prison Social Climate Survey designed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Results suggest that inmate contact, working in high security level institutions, job stress, low reported commitment to the Bureau, and low perceived quality of supervision correlated with not being satisfied with one's job. Higher job satisfaction was found in older employees, longer employment in the Bureau, and with those employed in supervisory and psychological roles. Women and Whites were shown to have the highest job satisfaction. The results found in this study are beneficial to the Federal Bureau of Prisons and correctional literature.
