Motivation to succeed: Individual and community factors which predict success with individuals released from conrep in California.

This study aimed to investigate the factors which impact the efficacy of the Forensic Conditional Release Program (CONREP) in California. This program monitors forensically committed individuals upon release from the California State Hospital system. CONREP provides continuing support and therapy to this population. Previously published reports have supported the efficacy of this program versus traditional parole programs. However, little research has been performed to determine which areas account for this success. The present study utilized files of 276 previous participants of CONREP to study internal and external characteristics which effect successful conditional release. Data was obtained through the Department of Finance and CONREP and a regression model was utilized to determine which factors carried the most significance when considering a successful outcome in CONREP. Analyses were also performed to determine if county practitioners versus private practitioners impacted individual success. Results suggest that multiple internal and external factors carry significance when determining the likelihood that an individual would be returned to a prison or state hospital.
