A Medical Identity Theft Prevention, Detection, and Mitigation Guidebook consisting of recommendations to fight medical identity theft was attempted for this project. Subsequently an informational checklist in the form of a rack card was created on the principles of educating, empowering, and involving patients in their own care. Tips for preventing and detecting medical identity theft, as well as steps to take and a list of contacts were included to aid patients. The guidebook and checklist were created because medical identity theft is affecting far too many Americans resulting in billions of dollars in victim expenses and the possibility of severely impacting care. Healthcare organizations, insurance companies, and consumers are also adversely affected by the magnitude of this crime.;The methods used to complete this project included researching journals, magazines, and websites with the project evolving after realizing the role patients can play in not only preventing, but detecting medical identity theft. The outcome includes a guidebook that outlines recommendations for organizations to follow which will likely involve numerous employees with various expertise to implement a comprehensive plan. The consequences of medical identity theft and sharing health information, tips for preventing and detecting the crime, and what victims should do to mitigate the crime were included on the rack card created.
