Julia Morgan: Avant-garde businesswoman designing gendered space during the Progressive Era.

The alliance of progressive women formed during the suffrage movement in California between 1900 and 1920 established housing and institutions advocating women's advancement toward gender equality. Julia Morgan was the architect commissioned to design many of these buildings supporting the alliance. Subsequently, Morgan received credit as being sympathetic to her clients' causes. However, evidence suggests that Morgan was a strategic feminist who made sound decisions to maintain a successful business. Morgan, as well, did not welcome notoriety through public attribution of her pioneering work. Primary and secondary resources support the historical perspectives of the thesis on Julia Morgan's early twentieth century career and business management. A comparison of renowned female architects who built portions of the American landscape is offered here. Further, an examination of Morgan's historical buildings throughout California provides commentary on female individuality and gendered space.
