Economic development models: The sustainable South Bronx Model versus Majora Carter's Fresh Direct partnership.

In contemporary times, `economic development' is often viewed with suspicion by communities due to its association with exploitation. The most common form of `economic development is corporate economic development which harms a community's solidarity and character. Within this paper, South Bronx Unite and Sustainable South Bronx are equated with a distinctive form of grassroots and local economic development which is not often pursued by American developers. Majora Carter's partnership with Fresh Direct is equated with typical, corporate, undemocratic economic development. The South Bronx Unite and Sustainable South Bronx organizations are in conflict with Majora Carter's Fresh Direct partnership due to the promotion of different forms of economic development.;Environmental justice, economic justice, and sustainability are considered subcategories of social justice. Positive economic development should be inclusive of each discipline, thereby benefiting the entire community while providing a healthy economy. Environmental justice initiatives are most successful when addressed by communities through local legal measures. Economic justice is optimally provided through local, grassroots economic development. Lastly, a strong sustainability movement need not only include technological fixes but also the rights of nature.
